Two ways to connect your water-butt hose
A plastic water butt tap with a ¾-inch BSP male inlet gives you a water-control point on a matching female fitting. Choose the outlet to suit how you want to connect the hose.
Use Quick Connector with a matching female garden hose connector, or choose Barbed for a direct connection to ½-inch internal-diameter hose. Both have a blue handle and a downward-facing outlet.
One tap supplied in your selected style. Hose and connection accessories are sold separately.

Quick Connector: clip the hose connector onto the tap
The beige polypropylene model ends in a male garden quick-connect spigot. A matching female connector on the end of your hose clicks onto it, making it convenient to attach and remove the hose.
This option includes an inlet washer. Check that the receiving fitting gives the washer an appropriate sealing face, and make sure the hose connector locks securely onto the outlet.
The tap does not include the female hose connector or hose. A bare hose pushed over this spigot is not the intended connection.

Barbed: connect ½-inch hose directly
The white model has a ½-inch hose tail. Select hose by its internal diameter so that it fits over the ribbed outlet, then use a suitable clip or retaining method for your hose and installation.
This is a hosetail connection rather than a click-fit coupling. A female garden quick connector does not click directly onto the barb.
Route the hose with a gentle bend below the tap and leave enough slack that moving it does not pull or twist the plastic body.
Check the inlet before replacing your tap
The same nominal inlet size does not make every water-butt connection interchangeable.
Identify the receiving fitting
Both taps need a matching ¾-inch BSP female thread. An unthreaded hole or a different thread needs an appropriate mounting fitting or adapter, supplied separately. BSP is a nominal thread size, not a direct ruler measurement.
Assemble with care
Isolate or drain the relevant water supply first. Clean the mating fitting, start the thread by hand and use the sealing arrangement appropriate to that joint. Avoid forcing or overtightening plastic threads.
Test and maintain
Leave room around the blue handle, introduce water gradually and check the inlet and outlet connections. Drain exposed fittings and hoses when freezing conditions are expected.
Choosing between the two tap options
Which option works with a garden quick connector?
Choose Quick Connector. Its male spigot accepts a matching female garden hose connector. The Barbed option is for attaching suitable hose directly and does not have the same click-fit outlet.
What size hose fits the Barbed option?
The Barbed option has a ½-inch hose tail, for hose with a matching ½-inch internal diameter. This is separate from the tap’s ¾-inch BSP inlet thread. Use a suitable retaining clip or method for your hose.
Will either tap fit every water butt?
No. Both have a ¾-inch BSP male inlet and require a corresponding female fitting. Check your existing outlet before ordering. A different thread or an unthreaded wall requires a suitable adapter or mounting fitting.
Do I receive both taps and a hose?
No. You receive one tap in the outlet style selected above. Hose, female quick connectors, clips and tank mounting adapters are separate items. The Quick Connector model includes its inlet washer.

What is BSP?
What is BSP thread size?
BSP (British Standard Pipe) is a nominal pipe-thread size, not a direct measurement of a fitting’s bore or outside diameter. For example, a ½-inch BSP male thread measures about 21mm across its outer thread crests.
These figures are approximate outside diameters of male BSP threads, to help identify the nominal size. They are not inch-to-millimetre unit conversions:
- 3/8" BSP → 16.66 mm
- 1/2" BSP → 20.95 mm
- 3/4" BSP → 26.44 mm
- 1" BSP → 33.25 mm
- 1.25" BSP → 41.91 mm
- 1.5" BSP → 47.80 mm
- 2" BSP → 59.61 mm
- 3" BSP → 87.88 mm
- 4" BSP → 113.03 mm
Measure across the outside of a male thread, then check its pitch and whether it is parallel or tapered. Diameter alone does not confirm compatibility. Check the product’s stated thread specification before connecting.
